Surrender

At first glance, the word surrender seems very passive. You may even envision someone waving a white flag in defeat. Not a word you would want associated with you. However, I think we may be looking at it all wrong. What if surrender is actually active and a positive attribute?

As 2013 was drawing to a close, I began to think about my word for 2014. Rely had been my word and with my cancer surgery, a multitude of changes within our family and health issues is was such a powerful reminder for me to rely on God for all things at all times. Seeing the impact of the one word idea, I began seeking God for my word for the new year. Surrender. He just impressed upon my heart – surrender. To be honest, I wasn’t excited about that choice. I mean it wasn’t flashy, dynamic or powerful. But God began to alter my perspective on this word surrender. You see, God wasn’t telling me to enter into the new year waving a white flag and just give up. No, God wants me to surrender in 2014 to His will, His way and His plans for my life setting aside (surrendering) my plans, my desires and my will. I certainly do not know what 2014 holds for my family and me, but I am choosing to lay down my plans for something greater – God’s plans.

What is your word for 2014? If you haven’t selected one, I encourage you to spend some time with God and see what He has in mind for you.

  1. I think surrender is a great word for the year. It says that God is first and Heis in charge. I think it will not be easy. In our imperfect human form we often try to take care of things ourself and forget to surrender.

  2. What a great word to start the year off with. We need to start each day with surrendering to Christ. I chose focus/focused for 2014. I need to stay focused on Christ more than the chaos that surrounds me and my home/family.

    • I selected my one word for 2013, rely, based on my current health issues. It seemed fitting. Since the whole idea of having a word for the year had such an impact, I decided to take it to God. I listened as scripture came to mind, as well as, the word surrender itself. I simply let God lead me to my word.

  3. I have chosen “focus”. I want to focus all aspects of my life on God. It’s easy to fall into the habit of reading scripture in the morning and then a few hours later get caught up with deadlines at work, what’s for dinner, too much traffic and don’t forget to make that doctor appointment. I want to keep my focus on Him throughout every 24 hr period. I see a challenge ahead of me, but I know that He will see the desire in my heart and help me along the way. Have a Blessed & Happy New Year.

  4. Jamy, as I spent Advent praying and preparing for my Jesus, I also had days throughout school vacation to simply rest in Him and in God’s Word…His promises to me! My word for 2014 is HOPE! I am always hopeful for the plans and the future He promised me in Jeremiah 29:11. I would also love to share Jesus! God’s love…to inspire hope in others every day every chance I get! Love your word surrender!
