The Dance – Book Review

It is Monday which means I have the privilege to share another great book with you. This week the book is The Dance.

I was was looking through the possible books to review, my eyes were drawn to a familiar name, Gary Smalley. For those who have not heard of him, Gary is a relationship expert and has written several nonfiction books. Therefore, I was intrigued to see how teaming up with another author and turning it into a fiction book would work. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. The relationship tips and advice are craftly woven throughout the story. The reader is so wrapped up into what is happening in the novel that she is unaware this advice is peppered throughout.

The Dance is about a couple, Jim and Marilyn, that have been married for many years and have three grown children. One day, after many years of problems, Marilyn decides that she can no longer take it, so she writes Jim a note and leaves. She does not want a divorce, but believes that some time apart is the only way that there can be any possible changes made or any time of resolution. Marilyn starts working in a small shop downtown. She always wanted to have a job outside the home after the children got older, but Jim wouldn’t hear of it. Marilyn also decides to start taking ballroom dance lessons. She was the only person without a partner the first night, so the instructor, Roberto, said he would be her partner. Needless to say, when Jim drove by the dance studio and saw them together he exploded. Will dance lessons end up bringing Marilyn and Jim closer or drive them farther apart?

The characters in this book are so dynamic. The reader gets an inside look at both sides of the situation between Marilyn and Jim. The reader also gets a look into how this effects their adult children, especially with Michele’s wedding right around the corner.

I would highly recommend this book. Not only was it a great read, but there were great relationship insights tucked within the pages of this novel. The Dance is the first in the Restoration Series. I am eagerly anticipating the release of the second book in the series.
