I love Christmas and therefore, I am drawn to Christmas stories. I love curling up with a good book and a cup of coffee on a snowy day. If the weather is anything like where I live, you will be looking for a good book to read. I just finished a delightful story by Melody Carlson, The Christmas Pony.
Lucy is a young girl growing up in the late 1930s. Her father was killed in an accident, so it is just her, her mom and grandmother. Christmas is right around the corner and more than anything, Lucy wants the pony, Smoky, that the neighbor is selling. Lucy is old enough to realize that some dreams will never come to pass no matter how hard she hopes and prays. However, a quick trip to town and a chance meeting could change things for Lucy and her family. George and Veronica are looking for a place to stay while their car gets repaired. Lucy sees this as an answer to prayer and tells them about the rooms they have for rent. She runs home to share the news with her mama and grandma.
Will this extra money ease the financial strain they are under? Will these strangers bring more problems than solutions? Will Lucy’s dream ever come true?
I love how Melody develops her characters. You are going through life with little Lucy, drawing close to Smoky and longing for her mama to smile again.
I would definitely recommend this book. I have read several great ones by Melody Carlson. I look forward to more in the future. Keep Christmas around just a little while longer and pick up this book and get lost in the story.
