January brings with it a chance to start fresh. It is a new year; a new school semester; starting new goals/resolutions, etc. Starting new goals and resolutions are good, but unless there is a “new you”, the results this year will not be any different than the past. In other words, it is a matter of the heart. We need to turn our hearts over to God and let Him lead us – only then will we see a true difference. I had the privilege yesterday to be with a couple of others who sat down with a young woman who wanted to know more about God. In the end, she prayed and accepted Christ into her life. According to 2 Corinthians 5:17, “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come, ” she, and anyone else who accepts Christ, is a new creation. This young woman’s life is forever changed, but so was mine that day. I truly see that the need is so great. There are so many, especially in today’s society, that do not know Christ as their Savior. It is our “job” as Christians to try and reach these people that are lost, “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). This is the great commission, which is for all Christians. However, many of us, including myself, have passed over this thinking it is someone else’s job; like missionaries and pastors, or simply have not taken the time out of their busy schedules to truly see the need around them. You do not have to be a missionary on foreign soil to find those who do not know or have not heard of Christ. As the year 2012 starts, many people are preparing for the world to end. I do not know, or anyone else for that matter, “Therefore, keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour” (Matthew 25:13), when the Lord will choose to take His people home, but I know that tomorrow is not guaranteed for any of us.
My life has forever been changed. I see that the need is so great. If you have accepted Christ as your Savior, I challenge you to reach out to those around you in this new year. You do not need to leave the country to find the lost. Sometimes, it can be as close as the person across the street. Make 2012 a new year and a new you, with a focus on God. If you have never accepted Christ as your Savior, I ask that you contact me directly or talk with someone else right away about having a personal relationship with Christ. Do not delay. Christ wants to make you new as well.
